During the three years since Vedran Corluka left Manchester City to join Tottenham, his former club have become the richest in the world, yet this has not shaken the Croatian defender's belief that White Hart Lane is the best place for him.
Corluka spent one year at Eastlands - his first taste of English football - before moving to north London for £8.5million on September 1, 2008, the same day that City were bought by the Abu Dhabi United Group.
Since then, he has watched City's oil-rich owners spend nearly £500million in signing some of the best-paid players on the planet, a transfer policy that has propelled City into next season's Champions League and helped them win this year's FA Cup.
City's move into the Premier League's top four means Tottenham's only hope of playing in European competition next year is the Europa League, for which they will qualify if they beat Birmingham on Sunday.
Corluka claimed when he joined Spurs, however, that they were a bigger club than City - and he has seen no reason to change his mind.
"I still think that," he said. "The fans are a little bit more close to the club here than at City. I have nothing against City and I had a great time there but when I played for City, the stadium wasn't always full, whereas here, you never see that. Here, the stadium is full even when we play friendlies, so you can see that there is more passion for the club here than there is there. The most important thing for Spurs now, though, is to keep this team together and to add some players, not to sell two players and then try to rebuild the team because then it's a hard thing to do.
"When you have a squad that have been here for a while and you just bring in the players you need - the manager will know them - then it's much easier. If we stay together for a long time it's easier to achieve bigger things because we will know each other so well."
These are words that reflect those of Harry Redknapp throughout the campaign. Without Champions League football to offer, though, it makes the task of keeping the squad together considerably more difficult.
Gareth Bale, Luka Modric and Rafael van der Vaart have admirers across Europe but Van der Vaart has already indicated he is keen to stay and Corluka has encouraging news for Spurs fans worried about the future of Modric.
The pair have been close since they were teenagers at Dinamo Zagreb and Corluka believes Modric is happy to remain but he did suggest strongly that the playmaker would be watching Spurs' summer transfer activity carefully for signals of their ambition.
Modric's displays in midfield this season have been so accomplished that he has attracted attention from Manchester United and Inter Milan, and Corluka has backed his friend to emulate some of the world's best in his position. "Everyone wants to play in the best competitions but we need to try to achieve that here, not think about leaving the club to go somewhere else," added Corluka. "We need to try to put the club in the Champions League next year.
"I'm good friends with Luka and I don't see any desire there that he wants to leave the club. When I have spoken with him, he has never said that he wants to leave Spurs. He knows he is an important player here, everyone likes him and I think he wants to achieve good things.
"But, of course, he will expect maybe a couple more signings to be added to this team. I have known him since he was 14, and even then you could see he was a quality player but now he's showing it in one of the toughest leagues and you see that he is probably one of the best in his position.
"You have players like Xavi and Andres Iniesta for Barcelona who are great in his position but Luka is showing he is close to them. Look at the clubs showing an interest in him. That proves how good he is."
Along with Modric, Niko Kranjcar and Eduardo Da Silva, Corluka honed his skills in the Dinamo Zagreb academy. With Croatia greats Zvonimir Boban and Robert Prosinecki also having represented Dinamo's junior teams, the club have much to be proud of when they see their graduates performing well across Europe.
Corluka recognises the debt he owes Dinamo but admits there is still some hostility in Croatia towards the best players' decision to leave the country.
"When you see the Dinamo Zagreb school, it is one of the best in Europe," said Corluka. "More and more players are coming through that club. There are so many good players that European clubs want to buy them.
"It's a shame the team I was in broke up because we had a great team - Eduardo and Modric were both there. But it's difficult to say the players can't go. At that age, you want to try to show you are a quality player in better leagues.
"Maybe some fans are angry because of that but they need to think that if someone offered them a better job, they would go as well.
"Some fans in Zagreb maybe think I was going for the money but I don't care for that. I just care about what people close to me think. You come to England to play against the best players and measure yourself against them. I don't think money can buy that."
Corluka, who was described as the best full-back in the world by Croatia coach Slaven Bilic in 2008, hasn't had the smoothest ride this year, having been affected by ankle problems.
They have prevented him from training regularly with the first-team squad and have left him unable to play more than once a week but he is confident that the close-season will give him the time he needs to nurse both ankles back to health.
Yet Corluka has still been Redknapp's first-choice right-back for most of his Spurs career and, while he concedes a title challenge is unlikely next season, the former City man is convinced he can help the club hold their own among England's elite.
"It was nice for Bilic to say that but I haven't been playing as well as I was when he said it," said Corluka. "I know what the reality is and I know how far I have to go. I believe in myself but I am realistic. As for next season, it's difficult, but with some investment, of course, we could be there to compete.
"It's hard to say we can win the league in a certain period, though. We need to think positively and to think we can do it but when, we don't know."
Sportske Jutarnji.
